WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY?
A gentle, holistic approach
to health and wellbeing
Craniosacral therapy is a body-oriented, non-invasive, hands-on session that supports the body’s self-regulation and healing capacity. It developed in the USA in the first half of the 20th century from osteopathy, which in turn partly traces its roots to the ancient healing practices of Native Americans.
Through gentle touch and attentive listening, practitioners facilitate the release of restrictions and help restore a stronger sense of relaxation, resilience, and well-being. The client is lying comfortably and fully dressed on a massage table. The session’s focus is to support the inherent health of a body system, especially the nervous system, and pain processing.
Rather than focusing on diagnosis and symptoms, Craniosacral Therapy takes the person as a whole — recognising the close relationship between body, mind, and emotional wellbeing. Practiced in many countries worldwide, Craniosacral Therapy keeps gaining recognition as a respected complementary method in healthcare and wellness.

From Initial Meetings
to a Registered Umbrella Association
The European Craniosacral Association (ECSA) was established in 1998 by several Craniosacral associations across Europe and was registered in Germany as a non-profit organization (eingetragener Verein, e.V.).
From 2015 to 2025, the registered association remained inactive, while the community continued its work under ECSAN—a network of Craniosacral associations that gathered annually in different European countries, fostering connections within the Craniosacral community.
In 2026, ECSA was re-registered as a non-profit association (eingetragener Verein, e.V.), providing a solid legal framework for its future development.
